Kitchen Design and Lighting

One of the most important elements in kitchen design and function is lighting. It can be broken down to two basic categories, room lighting and task lighting. Room lighting is the lighting needed to light up the kitchen for people to use it. It does not necessarily light up the work area in a kitchen, but in general fills the room with light.

Kitchen remodeling room lighting options:
  • Surface mount lighting hanging from the ceiling
  • Recessed lighting mounted in the ceiling
  • Other general lighting that allows the kitchen to be lit

This is why task lighting is very important and often overlooked in kitchen renovation projects. The general lighting overhead is often blocked by your body as you prepare a meal. It is mainly needed to light up the kitchen at night and provide adequate light over a table area. Task lighting is going to be lights mounted in the bottoms of the wall kitchen cabinets to light up the countertop area to make working in the kitchen easier, and hopefully need less electricity in the end to accomplish this. By installing the lights in the bottoms of the wall cabinets the counter tops become fully lit with virtually no shadows and dead spots. Now a days task lighting is becoming smaller and smaller, and using L.E.D. lights reduces heat and energy consumption. The smaller size helps conceal the fixture so only the light is seen.

Hanging fixtures in a room can help tie your kitchen design together by using the correct period fixtures as well keeping the color of the metals consistent with other metals in the room such as the sink faucet and kitchen cabinet hardware. Recessed lighting is becoming less popular in kitchen renovation since now there are so many different lighting systems available even for contemporary kitchens. Here sleek track systems that use pendants in all different shapes and finishes give the ceiling more dimension and add more character to the kitchen than recessed lighting does. Track systems are most often found in a satin nickel or stainless steel finish to help keep a contemporary look.

It is important to discuss lighting in the early stages of kitchen remodeling so the electrician can ensure that outlets & wiring is set up in the right spots. You will also have time to research different lighting options which will help tie it in with the kitchen design and create an end result that you will be pleased with.
